Staying in Lorne
Alive in the outdoors
Lorne's main beach in the Loutitt Bay is one of the best on the Great Ocean Road, a fantastic spot for sunrise or a late sunset stroll, when the pier lights up the bay. Protected from the prevailing south-westerly winds of the Great Ocean Road coast, you can cool off in the sparkling waters or take a stroll up to Shelley Beach along the sculpture trail to explore the rock pools.
The nearby Great Otway National Park is a nature lover's playground with misty waterfalls, giant ferns and ancient forest.
Discover the Erskine Falls cascading into a beautiful fern gully, one of ten waterfalls within ten minutes of town, or stroll the coast with leafy green eucalypts lining the coast of Bass Strait.
At sea
For those keen to pursue a bit of fishing during their holidays, the Lorne Pier is a great place to cast a line for trevally, barracuda and whiting.
Lorne Point has historically been a site for elite longboarders and learn-to-surfers alike. The peeling right-hander provides a perfect rolling reef break to practice your cross-stepping or get to your feet for the very first time.
Held annually for over 40 years, Lorne’s Pier to Pub Ocean Swim is the world’s largest ocean swim. The crystal clear waters offer a truly unique experience for thousands of ocean swimmers who flock to the event each year.
Happy wanderings
Whether you're staying overnight or just passing through, take time out to wander down Lorne's main shopping strip, or the beachfront, filled with boutique gift stores, cellars, eateries and galleries. Relax with a latte at a sidewalk cafe, picnic under the trees on the foreshore, or dine on the fresh gourmet delights at a local restaurant.
Plan your trip, stay a few nights, indulge in some fine foods, experience Lorne, enjoy the sculpture trail during the day, or even better at dawn or dusk.
